Wooden Periodic Table
The periodic table of the chemical elements is a tabular method of displaying the chemical elements. Although precursors to this table exist, its invention is generally credited to Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. But there is now also a wooden version of the Periodic Table by Theodore Gray, but this time it's a real table. After building an Periodic table by accident in early 2002, as a result of a misunderstanding while reading Uncle Tungsten by Oliver Sacks.
There is also a website to document all samples, and that's when things really got out of hand. A few months later the little table won the 2002 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry, clearly the highest honor for which it is eligible.
